Steel Shadow is a dark blue-grey – the colour of steel in shadow. It is the base coat of non-metallic steel and an excellent dark tone for black cloth: dark enough to stand in for black, but with a cold blue that keeps the surface readable.

What it is good for on miniatures

Frequently asked questions

How do I start non-metallic steel?
Steel Shadow over the whole item, then split the surface into a light and a dark half according to the light direction, and only then work on reflections. Steel is painted from dark to light, never the other way round.

Can I use it instead of black?
Yes, in cold schemes it is the better choice. The surface stays readable even in a photograph, where black merges.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
