Black Metal is a dark metallic with a subtle sheen – the colour of raw iron and oxidised steel. It is the base coat of every metal ladder: dark enough to give the metal depth and metallic enough for the surface to catch light.

How do I paint metal so it does not look like foil?
Metal needs shade and highlight just as much as a colour does. Base with Black Metal, dry-brush Steel and touch the highest edges with Silver. Without a dark base a metallic always looks flat.
Can I glaze over it?
Yes, and it is worth doing. A brown glaze over Black Metal gives iron a warm aged tone – clean metallics look too new.
How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
