Small dry brush with a rounded head – built for the abrasive dry brushing technique on figures and small details.

Dry brushing destroys ordinary brushes: the bristles are dragged across a hard surface with almost no lubrication. AK builds this family with stiff, durable fibre packed into a rounded dome, so it keeps its shape through the abuse and releases pigment only where the surface stands proud.

What it is for

  • Dry brushing raised detail on 28 mm figures
  • Picking out chainmail, scales and fur
  • Stone and rubble texture on small bases
  • Metal edge wear on weapons and armour

What to pair it with

The four sizes step up cleanly – AK Dry Brush – M for bases, AK Dry Brush – L for terrain, AK Dry Brush – XL for large scenery. A conditioning fluid after each session keeps the dome from splaying.

Frequently asked questions

How dry is dry?
Wipe the brush on kitchen paper until it leaves almost no mark, then do two more wipes. Nearly every failed dry brush is a brush with too much paint on it.

Can I dry brush with a normal round brush?
You can, once or twice. The splayed tip afterwards is why dedicated dry brushes exist.

How do I clean an AK synthetic brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.

Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?
Synthetic fibre is springier, cheaper and completely indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, oils, pigments and every abrasive technique. Sable holds more liquid and comes to a finer point – that is the da Vinci brushes range. Most painters end up owning both and using each for what it does best.

The complete range is in the AK Interactive brushes category.
