Size 1 is the smallest of the three AK flat brushes. The straight, chisel-like edge lays paint down in an even film instead of a rounded stroke, which is exactly what you want when covering a shoulder pad, a shield or a vehicle hatch. Frequently asked questions
Is a flat brush good for dry brushing?
It works – the straight edge loads very little paint and rubs evenly – but AK makes dedicated dry brushes with a rounded head (AK Dry Brush – S and up) that hold their shape much longer under that abuse.
Which size should I buy first?
If you paint 28–32 mm figures, start with size 1 or 2. Size 4 only pays off on vehicles, terrain and larger busts.
How do I clean an AK synthetic brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.
Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?
Synthetic fibre is springier, cheaper and completely indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, oils, pigments and every abrasive technique. Sable holds more liquid and comes to a finer point – that is the da Vinci brushes range. Most painters end up owning both and using each for what it does best.
