Medium filbert – the blending size for busts, cloaks and every transition too wide for a size 2.

Size 4 is the filbert most bust painters settle on. It covers a cheek or a forearm in one sweep, and because the head is wider the paint stays workable longer under the brush – which is the difference between a blend and a smear.

What it is for

  • Blending on busts, 54 mm and larger figures
  • Large cloth areas: cloaks, robes, tunics
  • Soft shading on armour curves and helmets
  • Oil paint blending where a broad head helps

What to pair it with

This is the size that pairs best with oil paints – the synthetic fibre survives thinners that would ruin sable. Go bigger with AK Synthetic Brush – Filbert 6 on large busts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one filbert for both acrylics and oils?
Better not. Keep one for water-based paint and one for oils and enamels; residual thinner and pigment contaminate acrylic work.

How much paint should be on the brush?
Less than feels right. A blending brush should be damp, not loaded – wipe it on a tissue before every sweep.

How do I clean an AK synthetic brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.

Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?
Synthetic fibre is springier, cheaper and completely indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, oils, pigments and every abrasive technique. Sable holds more liquid and comes to a finer point – that is the da Vinci brushes range. Most painters end up owning both and using each for what it does best.

The complete range is in the AK Interactive brushes category.
