Large flat synthetic brush for vehicles, terrain and full varnish coats – maximum coverage per stroke.

Size 4 is the coverage brush. On a tank hull or a resin terrain piece it halves the number of strokes, and fewer strokes mean fewer visible brush marks. It is too broad for infantry detail, which is the point – this is the brush you pick up first and put down before the detail work starts.

What it is for

  • Base coat on tank hulls, hulls and large vehicle surfaces
  • Priming and varnishing resin terrain and scenery
  • Covering display bases and plinths in one pass
  • Applying washes over a whole model surface

What to pair it with

Use it to lay the ground colour, then switch to AK Synthetic Brush – Round 2 for the transition areas and AK Synthetic Brush – Round 3/0 for detail. For dry brushing over that base, AK Dry Brush – L is the tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is size 4 overkill for 28 mm figures?
For the figures themselves, yes. For their bases, terrain and the varnish pass it is the fastest brush in the range.

Will a wide brush leave streaks?
Not if the paint is thinned properly and you work in one direction while the surface is still wet. Streaks come from going back over paint that has started to set.

How do I clean an AK synthetic brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.

Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?
Synthetic fibre is springier, cheaper and completely indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, oils, pigments and every abrasive technique. Sable holds more liquid and comes to a finer point – that is the da Vinci brushes range. Most painters end up owning both and using each for what it does best.

The complete range is in the AK Interactive brushes category.
