Hammer-shaped brush – a short blunt head built for stippling, chipping and sponge-like texture.

The hammer brush has a short, squared-off head with almost no flex. You do not draw with it, you tap with it – and that is exactly how chipping, rust blooms and rough concrete texture should be applied. It gives the randomness of a sponge with the control of a brush.

Frequently asked questions

Will stippling ruin the brush?
It wears any brush faster than normal painting, which is why AK made a short stiff head for it instead of asking a detail brush to do the job.

Sponge or hammer brush for chipping?
A sponge is faster over a large area; the hammer brush is controllable, so you can keep the wear where it belongs – edges, hatches, footholds.

How do I clean an AK synthetic brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.

Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?
Synthetic fibre is springier, cheaper and completely indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, oils, pigments and every abrasive technique. Sable holds more liquid and comes to a finer point – that is the da Vinci brushes range. Most painters end up owning both and using each for what it does best.

The complete range is in the AK Interactive brushes category.
