Round synthetic brush size 1 – more paint per load for base coats, washes and larger figures.

Size 1 is where the round brush starts behaving like a workhorse. The larger belly carries a serious load of thinned paint, which matters on 54 mm figures, busts and anything where a size 0 would have you back at the palette every second stroke.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too big for 28 mm?
For cloaks and bases, no. For faces and detail, yes – keep a 3/0 or 2/0 within reach.

Why does the tip curl after washing?
Usually a drop of paint left at the base of the bristles. Rinse until the water runs clear, then reshape the tip and let it dry point-up.

How do I clean an AK synthetic brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.

Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?
Synthetic fibre is springier, cheaper and completely indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, oils, pigments and every abrasive technique. Sable holds more liquid and comes to a finer point – that is the da Vinci brushes range. Most painters end up owning both and using each for what it does best.

The complete range is in the AK Interactive brushes category.
