Desert Sand from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a light sand for desert bases, cloth and vehicles. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Desert Sand is a light warm sand with neither a pink nor a green cast. It is one of the most useful light tones in the range – good for bases, desert uniforms and as a highlight over browns. Its high opacity makes it a rewarding base coat.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • Desert bases – a base coat under dry-brushing and pigments.
  • Desert uniforms and canvas – covers in two coats even over a dark base.
  • Highlights on brown leather and wood – a natural step up from the mid browns.
  • Dust and build-up – thinned into a glaze it settles into lower edges like real dust.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Khaki and Desert Yellow, transitions and highlights with Bone and Ivory.

Frequently asked questions

What should I shade Desert Sand with?
A warm brown or ochre – Dark Ochre or Khaki. A grey shade would cool it down and the sand would lose its warmth.

Is it good for dry-brushing?
Very. It has enough pigment to catch every edge with a light pass, and the matt finish will not shine even in a heavier layer.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
