Ivory from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a warm cream white for bone, paper and aged cloth. Matt 20 ml acrylic for brush and airbrush.

Ivory is a warm cream white with a soft yellow undertone. Where pure white reads as plastic on a figure, Ivory reads as a material – bone, paper, faded canvas. It is a comfortable highlight colour anywhere you do not want a cold glint.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • Bone and skulls – a finished base coat that only needs a shade in the sockets and sutures.
  • Paper, scrolls and maps – covers in one or two coats and takes a dirty glaze once thinned.
  • Faded cloth – linen shirts, bandages and tents where white would look too new.
  • Warm highlights on skin – instead of pure white – it will not chill the flesh tone.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Rotten Flesh and Old Bone, transitions and highlights with White.

Frequently asked questions

When do I use Ivory and when Bone?
Ivory is paler and less yellow, Bone leans further into beige. Use Ivory for highlights on bone and Bone for the base coat.

Can I use Ivory for white armour?
Yes, and it often looks better than pure white. Base with Ivory, shade with a light grey and touch the topmost edges with white.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
