Midnight Blue is a near-black blue – so dark it barely separates from black on the palette, yet on a figure it still carries colour. It is the deepest point of the blue ladder and, with Dark Violet, the best black substitute in the range.

Build shadows with Black and Dark Violet, transitions and highlights with Astral Blue and Phthalo Blue.
Why not use black?
Black reflects no light and the surface loses its shape. Midnight Blue is just as dark but the shadow stays readable and the figure gains depth – in a photograph the difference is immediate.
Can I use it over a whole area?
You can, but it needs strong highlights. Without them a dark blue surface merges into one mass exactly as black does.
How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
