Old Red is a faded pinkish red – a colour that used to be saturated and has been washed out by years in the sun. That is precisely what makes it so good for historical cloth, old banners and anything that should not look new. On skin it works as a subtle flush.

How do I paint a faded banner?
Base with a saturated red, glaze Old Red over the folds and dry-brush an even lighter tone on the raised areas. Fading is always strongest where the cloth rubs most.
Is it a red or a pink?
Formally a red, in practice an old rose. Next to a clean red it clearly reads pink.
How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
