A dried lake bed, cracked clay, scorched earth – an effect that is hard to fake with paint because cracks need depth. This product creates that depth itself: applied thinly over an acrylic base, it cracks as it dries. Crack size is governed by layer thickness and drying speed – a hairdryer speeds it up and opens the cracks wider.

What it is good for

What to combine it with
Paint the base darker than the final surface – the cracks reveal the colour underneath and that is where the depth comes from. Build the surrounding dry ground from Terrains Dry Ground or Terrains Desert Sand. The wet, freshly cracked variant is Wet Crackle Effects. Settle dust with pigments from the Pigments category.
FAQ
How do I control crack size?
With layer thickness and drying speed. A thin coat drying slowly gives a fine network; a thicker coat under a hairdryer gives large cracks. Test on a piece of card first.
Why did my layer not crack?
Either it was too thin or the base was not acrylic. The product needs an absorbent acrylic base; it will not take on gloss varnish.
How do I clean my tools?
Water, as long as the material is still wet. Rinse the brush right after use – the cured acrylic product will not come off.
Can the effect be painted over?
Yes, once fully cured. A thinned wash deepens the cracks and a drybrush picks out the edges between them.
