Imperial Flesh from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a mid tanned flesh tone for shading and everyday skin. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Imperial Flesh is a mid-dark flesh tone with brown warmth. Most painters use it as the first shade under fair skin – dark enough to create volume, still fleshy enough not to read as dirt. On darker characters it works as the base coat.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • The first shade under fair skin – into eye sockets, under the nose and in neck folds.
  • The base of darker complexions – southern and tanned characters.
  • Transitions on the face – the connecting tone between highlight and deep shadow.
  • Leather next to skin – so straps do not read much colder than the hand.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Tanned Flesh and Dark Skin, transitions and highlights with Zombie Skin and Elf Skin.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from Tanned Flesh?
Imperial Flesh is lighter and yellower, Tanned Flesh darker and redder. Use Imperial Flesh as the first shade and Tanned Flesh as the deeper one.

Can I use it as a glaze?
Yes, and it is one of its best uses. Thinned into a glaze it unifies a face that looks too broken up after shading.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
