Light Rust from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a bright rust orange-brown for corrosion and highlights. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Light Rust is a bright rust orange-brown – exactly the colour of fresh corrosion on iron. It is more saturated than the ordinary browns, so on rusted surfaces it creates the luminous patches without which rust just reads as dirt.

What it is good for on miniatures

Frequently asked questions

How do I paint rust that reads as rust?
In layers and from the top down. A dark brown base, Light Rust stippled where water sits, and streaks running from rivets and seams. Rust has direction – gravity pulls it down.

Can I use it as a highlight on brown?
Yes, and it is excellent for it. On leather and wood it gives a warm, almost honeyed cast that sand tones cannot.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
