Plasma Green from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a dark olive yellow for shading acid and toxic tones. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Plasma Green is a dark olive with a strong yellow core. On the palette it looks unremarkable, on a figure it is irreplaceable – it is the only sensible shade under acid greens and yellows that does not dirty them into brown. On its own it makes a good military olive.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • Shadows on acid greens – darkens without the tone losing its toxicity.
  • Military olive – a base coat for modern uniforms and vehicles.
  • Swamp water and algae – an underlayer beneath gloss glazes on bases.
  • Old brass – an undercoat for patinated metal.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Dragon Green and Moss Green, transitions and highlights with Stone Green and Mystic Green.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a green or a yellow?
Technically a yellow with a strong green shift. It sits with the greens in lists because that is how it is used – as the shade of a green ladder.

Can I mix it with black?
You can, but you should not need to. For a still darker shade use Dark Ochre or Brown Green – black turns olive into an indeterminate grey.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
