Sapphire Blue from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a deep sapphire blue for gemstones and cloth. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Sapphire Blue is a deep dark blue with a jewel-like character – saturated but never black. It is the colour of sapphires, deep water and night robes. On small areas such as gemstones it gives exactly the depth lighter blues cannot.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • Gemstones – sapphires on rings, pommels and crowns.
  • Deep water – the darkest areas of a surface on a base.
  • Dark robes – rich blue cloth with depth.
  • Shadows on saturated blue – a step down that does not take the colour away.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Midnight Blue, transitions and highlights with Astral Blue and Phthalo Blue.

Frequently asked questions

How do I paint a gemstone?
Dark on the top half, light on the bottom, then a white dot in the opposite corner and a fine white line along the upper edge. A gem is about reflection – a realistic gradient turns it into a ball.

Does it cover black primer?
Yes, dark blues cover well. Two thin coats give an even surface.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
