Thick dark brown texture for rich, damp soil. 250 ml, thick or thin layers, a finished shade with no mixing.

The dark forest and field soil that underpins most European scenes. The paste is thick and can be laid on genuinely heavy, so you can model clods, furrows and the lip of a trench rather than just brushing on colour. The shade is finished – nothing to mix, which is the difference from the neutral base textures.

What it is good for

  • Forest and field soil under a figure or vehicle

What to combine it with

Add dry patches to the same scene with Terrains Dry Ground and wet ones with Terrains Wet Ground – the contrast is what brings a scene alive. Add dust and highlights with pigments from the Pigments category, and grass and roots from Vegetation.

FAQ

Does it crack in a thick layer?
In a very thick single layer, yes. Build up in coats of 5 mm or less and let each dry – or use the cracks, they look natural on churned ground.

How do I make clods?
Lay the paste with a spatula and stipple it with an old brush or a piece of sponge. Press grit or static grass into the still-wet paste.

How do I clean my tools?
Water, as long as the paste is still wet. Rinse the spatula and the old brush right after use – cured acrylic paste will not come off.

Can the paste be thinned?
Yes, with water or acrylic thinner if you need it to flow better. Thinning costs it some shape retention, so go easy.
