Small filbert brush – a rounded flat head that blends without leaving the hard edge a flat brush makes.

A filbert is a flat brush with the corners rounded off. Those missing corners are the whole point: a flat brush stops at a visible line, a filbert fades out. Size 2 is the figure-scale version – small enough for a face, wide enough to move a transition in one pass.

What it is for

  • Soft transitions on faces, skin and cloth
  • Blending two layers while both are still wet
  • Feathering a highlight so it has no visible edge
  • Painting rounded forms – shoulders, helmets, muscle

What to pair it with

Filberts want a wet palette and slow-drying paint. Move up to AK Synthetic Brush – Filbert 4 for busts, or use AK Synthetic Brush – Round 2/0 when the transition is too narrow for a flat head.

Frequently asked questions

Filbert or round for blending?
A round blends by stippling and glazing, a filbert by sweeping. Most painters end up using both – the filbert is faster over a broad curve.

Why do my blends still show a line?
The lower layer was already dry. Wet blending only works while both colours are workable; otherwise switch to glazes.

How do I clean an AK synthetic brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.

Synthetic or Kolinsky sable?
Synthetic fibre is springier, cheaper and completely indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, oils, pigments and every abrasive technique. Sable holds more liquid and comes to a finer point – that is the da Vinci brushes range. Most painters end up owning both and using each for what it does best.

The complete range is in the AK Interactive brushes category.
