Golden Yellow from the Ionic Smart Colors range – a deep golden yellow for shading yellows and basing gold. Matt 20 ml acrylic.

Golden Yellow is a deep, saturated golden yellow. It is the natural shade for every yellow in the range – it darkens without dirtying, and it is handsome enough to stand alone as the colour of gold brocade. In NMM gold it forms the mid tone the whole ladder is built from.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • Shadows on yellow – the first step down that keeps the character of the tone.
  • NMM gold – the mid tone between the brown shadow and the light Ice Yellow.
  • Gold cloth and trim – brocade, borders and robes.
  • An undercoat for metallics – under Gold it gives the metal a deeper, warmer tone.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Bubonic Ochre and Ochre, transitions and highlights with High Coverage Yellow and Yellow.

Frequently asked questions

How do I build NMM gold?
From the bottom up: Dark Ochre or Burnt Umber as the shadow, Golden Yellow as the mid tone, Ice Yellow as the highlight and white at the tips. The contrast needs to be harder than feels natural – NMM lives on contrast.

Can I use it to shade oranges too?
Yes, on light oranges it works very well. For dark oranges it is already too yellow – use Shadow Orange there.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
