Poison Yellow is the darker, more muted sister of the acid yellows. Exactly where a black or brown shade would kill a yellow, Poison Yellow works – it darkens the tone but keeps its toxic character. On its own it is a good mustard colour for cloth and uniforms.

What it is good for on miniatures
- Shadows on acid yellows – the first step down from Slime Yellow without losing saturation.
- Mustard cloth – tunics, scarves and canvas with a warm earthy tone.
- Sick skin and slime – the mid tone between healthy and rotten flesh.
- Old brass and bronze surfaces – an undercoat for metallic glazes.
What to combine it with
Build shadows with Dark Ochre and Brown Green, transitions and highlights with Rotten Yellow and Vanilla.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just shade yellow with brown?
A brown shade dirties yellow and pushes the tone into earth. Poison Yellow darkens it while keeping the chemical character – for poison and slime that is exactly what you want.
Does it cover a dark base?
Better than the pale yellows, but it still wants two coats. Over black it is worth basing with High Coverage Yellow first.
How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.
Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
