Radiant Yellow is a bright, clean, very saturated yellow – with no greenish or earthy drift. It is the yellow that should read as full colour strength on a figure, so it belongs on main areas that need to be genuinely yellow.

What it is for in figure painting

  • Bright clothing and markings – where yellow must still read as yellow at arm's length.
  • Highlights on yellow – above Deep Yellow and Golden Yellow.
  • Light effects – the middle stage between orange and white.

What to pair it with

Shade with Deep Yellow or Ochre; highlight with Pale Yellow and Ice Yellow. A drop of Vermillion pushes it towards a warm, almost orange yellow.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make yellow actually glow?
With the undercoat. Over white or sand it looks full; over grey or black it always looks muddy, no matter how many coats you add.

Radiant Yellow or Laser Yellow?
Radiant Yellow is saturated and usable over large areas; Laser Yellow is brighter and better kept for light effects and small accents.

How do I thin it?
With water or an AK thinner. A few drops are enough for brush work; airbrushing needs more – AK thinners and cleaners are made for that. With acrylics, two thin coats always beat one thick one.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, the 3rd Generation range dries matt. To protect the figure or even out the sheen, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
