Ultramarine Blue is a classic ultramarine – a saturated blue with a soft violet core and centuries of tradition behind it. On a figure it reads deep and rich, and in mixes it gives beautiful violets because its violet component works with red.

What it is good for on miniatures

  • Blue cloaks and robes – a deep saturated blue over whole areas.
  • Mixing violets – with red and magenta it gives rich violet tones.
  • Shadows on lighter blues – the first step down.
  • Historical cloth – ultramarine was the colour of the costliest robes.

What to combine it with

Build shadows with Abyss Blue and Prussian Blue, transitions and highlights with Sky Blue and Rainfall Blue.

Frequently asked questions

When do I use Ultramarine and when Phthalo Blue?
Ultramarine has a violet core, Phthalo a green one. For violet mixes and warm blues take Ultramarine; for clean greens and cool blues, Phthalo Blue.

How do I highlight it without losing saturation?
Through Sky Blue and Ice Blue, not white. With white a blue loses its character by the second step and the surface starts to look grey.

How do I thin this paint?
With water or an Ionic thinner. The formula is self-hydrating, so it stays workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop is enough for brush work, and roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.

Is the finish really matt?
Yes, it dries matt with no shiny patches. If the figure is going on the gaming table, seal it with a matt varnish at the end.
