Non-metallic steel is harder than NMM gold, because cold metal reflects its surroundings more sharply and mistakes show more. Rodrigo Akore built a palette for exactly that: greys with both warm and cold casts, white for sharp speculars and a dark blue for the deepest reflections.

Frequently asked questions
Why is NMM steel harder than gold?
Because cold metal has harder, smaller speculars. Gold forgives a soft transition; steel does not – a blade needs a sharp boundary between light and shadow or it looks like plastic.
Why are there both warm and cold greys?
Because metal reflects its surroundings. The warm grey goes where ground or skin is reflected, the cold one where the sky is – and that difference is what makes metal convincing.
How do I thin these paints?
With water or an Ionic thinner. They are self-hydrating, so they stay workable on the palette far longer than ordinary acrylics – a drop for brush work, roughly 1 : 1 for airbrush.
Is the set better value than single jars?
