Natural Marta Kolinsky sable, size 1, short hair – maximum control for detail, layering and glazing with water-based paint.

This is the one natural-hair brush in the AK line. Marta Kolinsky – red sable – holds far more thinned paint than any synthetic fibre and releases it evenly, which is what makes long glazes and wet blending possible. The short version keeps the hair length down, and that trades a little paint capacity for a lot of control: the tip does what your hand does, with no lag.

What it is for

  • Layering and glazing on faces and skin
  • Controlled detail where a synthetic tip would spring back
  • Long wet blends that need a full load of thinned paint
  • Fine freehand where the point must stay sharp to the last stroke

What to pair it with

Keep it for water-based paint only – enamels, varnish and pigments belong on the synthetic range such as AK Synthetic Brush – Round 0 or AK Synthetic Brush – Flat 4. For an even longer-haired sable, compare the da Vinci brushes Kolinsky series.

Frequently asked questions

Short or long hair?
Short means more control and a stiffer feel; long means a bigger paint reservoir and softer strokes. For detail work at 28–32 mm, short is the safer choice.

Is natural hair worth the price over synthetic?
For glazing, layering and blending with water-based paint, yes – it holds more liquid and keeps a finer point. For everything abrasive or solvent-based it is a waste of a good brush.

How do I clean an AK brush?
Rinse it in clean water – or the matching thinner for enamels and oils – before the paint sets, work brush soap into the bristles with your fingers, reshape the tip and let it dry point-up. Never leave a brush standing in a jar. The cleaners are in thinners and cleaners.

Natural hair or synthetic?
Natural sable holds more liquid and keeps a finer point, which is what glazing and blending need. Synthetic is springier, cheaper and indifferent to harsh thinners, so it is the right choice for varnish, enamels, pigments and every abrasive technique. Most painters own both.

The complete range is in the AK Interactive brushes category.
