Unlike paint it does not sit as a layer – it catches in the texture of the surface and behaves like a real deposit, because that is what it is. This shade is middle east soil. The pale grey-beige soil of the dry Middle East. It is lighter and cooler than European earth, so on modern vehicles in desert camouflage it sits better than a classic brown. What to pair it with
For fixing there is AK048 Pigment Fixer or white spirit; thicker mud is mixed with Abteilung acrylic resin. Build the groundwork from AK textures and finish with vegetation.
Frequently asked questions
Is pigment applied dry or wet?
Both. Dry it goes on with a brush and can still be moved or wiped away – only the fixer locks it down. Wet it is mixed straight with fixer or white spirit and laid on as a thin slurry, which suits mud and deposits in recesses.
Why does pigment darken once fixed?
The liquid temporarily changes how light refracts, so wet pigment looks darker. Once fully dry the shade returns to its original dry colour – so there is no need to adjust anything based on the wet appearance.
Can pigments be mixed together?
Yes, and it is almost always worth it. Two or three earth shades blended in varying ratios give a single model the natural variation that one shade never achieves.
